Imagine standing in front of a room full of people, each with unique expectations and varying energies. Every move you make, every decision you take, affects the atmosphere and the experience of those around you. If you’re a DJ, you know that reading the room, adjusting the beat, and maintaining energy are essential skills to conquer the dance floor. If you’re a CEO, these same skills allow you to lead effectively, inspire your team, and keep focus on business goals.
Have you ever seen how a DJ can transform the energy of an entire room in just seconds? As both a CEO and a DJ, I have discovered that the ability to read, adapt, and lead is not confined to one realm—it’s a universal skill that transcends environments. The parallels between managing a dance floor and leading a company are strikingly profound, and at the heart of both lies the need for improvisation.
Improvisation: A Strategic Skill in Two Worlds
Improvisation is NOT synonymous with being unprepared. Whether at my DJ console or in the boardroom, improvising requires preparation, experience, and an attentive ear to what’s happening in the moment. DJs mix music, create emotional connections, read the audience’s cues, and adjust our playlists in real time.
Similarly, as a CEO, I face dynamic team dynamics, unexpected challenges, and opportunities that require swift and accurate decisions.
Three Pillars of Dynamic Improvisation
Through years of experience in both realms, I’ve identified three crucial elements that make improvisation effective:
- Situational Awareness As a DJ, I constantly scan the floor, noting which songs ignite the audience and which lower the energy. As a CEO, I apply the same sensitivity to perceive the mood of my team, market trends, and changing customer needs. This ability to “read the room” is fundamental for making informed decisions in real-time.
- Strategic Flexibility A DJ cannot cling to a rigid playlist when the vibe calls for something different. Similarly, in the business world, the most meticulous plans must adapt to the shifting realities of the market. The key is to keep the overall vision clear while adjusting the path to achieve it.
- Perfect Timing In both music and business, timing is everything. Knowing when to introduce a new element, when to shift strategy, or when to stay the course requires a mix of experience, intuition, and constant reading of the environment.
Improvisation and Business Leadership
For leaders, improvisation allows CEOs to respond authentically and strategically to challenges and opportunities. This doesn’t mean acting without a plan; rather, it means complementing a solid foundation with the ability to adapt to the unexpected.
A CEO who improvises well can:
- Challenge Biases: Just as a DJ adjusts a mix after sensing the audience’s response and energy, a leader must be willing to challenge their own assumptions and adapt strategies based on new information.
- Flexibility in Decisions: Just as a DJ changes tracks to please the audience, a CEO must align strategies with team or market needs, even if it means deviating from the initial plan.
- Blend Structure with Creativity: Improvisation does not oppose planning. A well-prepared DJ set allows for greater freedom to adjust. In business, a solid plan gives the CEO confidence to make decisions on the fly.
The Gift of Improvisation in Action From my console at an edition of El Party de Carlos to leading my companies in crucial meetings, I apply the same skills that electrify an audience to successfully lead my businesses. In both worlds, it all starts with active listening: What does the team or audience need? What signals are they sending?

The experience as a DJ has taught me to act with agility, identify the exact moment for a change, and maintain energy without losing sight of the goal. As a CEO, I use these same skills to foster a culture of collaboration, maintain focus on goals, and navigate challenges in a strategic and authentic way.

Develop Your Leadership ‘Set’ Improvisation is a skill that can be learned and refined with practice. Here are some strategies to integrate it into your leadership:
- Practice Active Listening: Don’t just hear, really listen to what’s happening around you, whether it’s the energy of a room or the concerns of your team.
- Keep an Open Mind: Being willing to change course, abandon a plan, or explore new ideas is crucial for improvising.
- Reflect and Learn: After each situation, evaluate what worked and what could be improved. This strengthens your intuition for the future.
- Embrace Controlled Chaos: Improvisation doesn’t eliminate uncertainty, but it gives you tools to handle it more confidently.
- Cultivate Daily Creativity: Both DJs and CEOs need to continually feed their creativity. Seek inspiration outside your usual area.
Leadership in Perfect Rhythm
The gift of improvisation isn’t exclusive to DJs or CEOs. I share my experience from my roles, but this is a skill that, when well-cultivated, will allow you to lead any aspect of your life with adaptability, creativity, and confidence. Whether you’re mixing beats or strategies, remember that the key is finding the balance between structure and flexibility.
The real magic of improvisation, whether in the booth or the office, lies in the empathetic connection with people. As a DJ, my goal is to create an experience that resonates with the audience. As a CEO, I strive to create an environment where people can grow, innovate, and thrive.
This ability to connect with people, read their needs, and respond authentically is what transforms improvisation from a mere reaction to a strategic plan.
